Abstract
The main objective of this study was to establish the socio-economic and
demographic factors that determine age at first birth in Uganda. Data from
the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (2011) was used in this study.
This survey was a follow up on the 1988/89, 1995, 200-01, and 2006
surveys, which covered the whole of Uganda. A Cox Proportional Hazard
Model was used to establish the determinants of age at first birth. The study
found that the average age at first birth in Uganda is 18.4 years. It was
further established that age of respondent, education, religion, region,
residence, and age at first sexual intercourse are the main determinants of
age at first birth in Uganda. The study recommends the promotion of policies
that aim at increasing women’s age at first birth
