Introduction
The aim of this study was to assess the risk of type 2 diabetes of fourth-year Egyptian and Malaysian medical students, Tanta Faculty of Medicine (Egypt). The Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool (AUSDRISK) was used. A cross-sectional study was designed. A randomized stratified cluster sample from among fourth-year medical students of Tanta faculty of medicine, both Egyptians and Malaysian students, was selected as a sample of the study.
Results
The type 2 diabetic risk score ranged between 2 and 23, with a mean of 7.53 ± 4.0 in Egyptian students, which was higher significantly than that of Malaysian students (6.75 ± 3.19). Moderate and severe risks of diabetes were found among 62.1 and 17.7%, respectively, of Egyptian students and among 55.0 and 9.9%, respectively, of Malaysian students.
Conclusion and recommendation
A high percent of our target group had a high risk for type two diabetes; therefore, they were in need of invasive investigations of fasting and random blood sugar as well as glycated hemoglobin. A health education program is needed for the moderate-risk group to implement lifestyle modifications
