Abstract
The current study explored women’s status during the course of reform in Vietnam using data from the Census, the Vietnam Living Standard Survey and the Vietnam Demographic and Health Survey. Pooled cross section method was used to assess the changes in women’s standing in different dimensions and domains across years. Descriptive statistics, paired samples t-test and ANOVA were employed. The findings showed that the absolute position of women improved while their relative status to men increased in most public spheres but decreased in domestic spheres. Urban women seemed to experience larger gender gap as well as southern women. Since education is one of the most important factors impacting women’s status in particular and gender equality in general, it is expected that achievement in education of women so far will make a ‘push’ for their development in other dimensions.
