Abstract
In Ukraine the mean age at childbirth and the mean age at birth of first child have been gradually growing since
the mid-90s. This trend is similar to almost all European countries but the change of pace differs across the
countries. In the present paper we examine the specific features of the “motherhood ageing” in Ukraine and its
difference from European countries. As compared to these countries postponement of childbearing is a relatively
recent phenomenon in Ukraine. Despite the increase in the mean age at childbirth and the mean age at first birth
Ukraine is still characterised by the lowest indicators among European countries. Analysis of fertility trends and
some findings of social and demographic surveys relative to reproductive intentions allow assuming that in our
country the mean age of a mother at birth of child in the next 5–7 years will rise quite rapidly, and after that,
the pace will slow down.
