Pakistan had an estimated TB prevalence of 364 per 100,000 people in 2010. Pakistan ranks sixth among 22 countries with a high burden of TB. The government of Pakistan began a TB control program in 1995 which can be divided into three phases: Phase I (1995–2000), Phase II (2001–2005), and Phase III (2006 to the present). With the help of the World Health Organization (WHO), DOTS pilot programs were initiated during Phase I and training materials for healthcare providers and managers were developed. Phase II brought the expansion of DOTS through public funding from outside partners like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as funding from The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (The Global Fund). The rapid expansion led to 100 % DOTS coverage by 2005. Phase III involves improving the quality of healthcare and implementing the Stop TB Strategy Pakistan which addresses TB/HIV co-infection, multiple drug-resistant TB strains, improving monitoring, and promoting research.
