Abstract | This study investigates the role of greenhouse farming on improving rural livelihood and agriculture growth in the case of Injil district of Heart Province, Afghanistan. The study examines the impacts of greenhouse farming on incomes, positive changes in betterment of rural community livelihood, its high potential contribution for the rural development, and shows that this technique of farming has the potential to provide fresh agricultural products to the markets especially in the off-seasons, which could not be grown without greenhouses. In order to do this study, field research was conducted in Injil district of Herat Province and three successful cases have been selected from varieties of farmers in three different villages that narrated their success stories on establishing greenhouse structures, greenhouse farming is identified as a means of agricultural development in order to strengthen livelihood of households and improve community development in rural areas of the country. Both primary and secondary data were used to achieve the objectives of this research; for obtaining primary data interviews were conducted with government officials, stakeholders and farmers as well as focus group discussions in the villages of Injil district; secondary data were acquired from Afghan documents and reports. |
