Abstract
In this article we provide insights into working with immigrant families in the United States from a critical multicultural perspective. We discuss the importance of understanding presenting problems within cultural contexts. We further consider how dynamics of class, gender, and race/ethnicity in home and host countries may influence the lives of immigrants and the problems they present. As a case in point, we describe dynamics surrounding incidents of domestic violence in a Peruvian immigrant couple, using critical conversations as a means of raising social awareness and guiding action in therapy.
