Abstract
The paper examines the impact of women’s political and socio-economic laws in Namibia. When
Namibia attained independence, the new government was tasked with redressing past
imbalances and equality and empowering were among those imbalances. Over the years
Parliament has passed statutes that have encouraged women to be appointed to leadership
positions. Our courts had a fair share in that it deemed legislation that was discriminatory
unconstitutional and as such was referred back to Parliament to be amended that if it was not
repealed. In order to better the situation of women in the country, Namibia has assented to
regional and international legislation which under article 144 became part of our municipal law.
The empowerment process has a great number of legislative backings, however, cultural
practices and other beliefs have been hindering the implementation of the women
empowerment process.
