Abstract
Skopje is the capital and largest city in The Republic of Macedonia.
Waste management is one of the biggest environmental problems in the city of
Skopje. Besides some positive results in the last few years Skopje still faces with a
number of challenges and problems in the area of urban waste management. Almost
all collected urban waste is disposed at the landfill “Drisla” near Skopje, without
any pretreatment. The conditions in the landfill could be improved with the
investments by foreign company in this landfill which started in 2012, but it is
achieved very slowly. A system of primary selection of urban waste has not been
established yet. Waste recycling is on a very low level, only a part of packaging
waste and a part of commercial waste are sent to recycling. Collection and
transportation of urban waste is operating exclusively by a public city enterprise, as
the only one authorized operator. In the near future there is a need for more
intensive actions towards to establishing a sustainable urban waste management in
Skopje. The main aim of this paper is to analyze and to research the urban waste
management in Skopje. Also the paper makes efforts to give some recommendations
for the further improvement.
