Abstract
Background: - A significant numbers of women make implanon as their first choice of contraception.
However, discontinue their implanon before it’s expire date was high, but factors that contribute for
discontinue their implanon were poorly described in Ethiopia especially in the study area. Thus, the aim
of this study is to identify determinants of implanon discontinuation among women who ever used
implanon in Duguna Fango District, Wolayta Zone, Southern Ethiopia.
Methods: A community based unmatched case control study design was conducted from March 20 to
April 20, 2017. Those women who discontinue implanon before 3 years were cases and those used
implanon for 3 years and more were controls. Cases and controls were identified detailed review of the
registration book of the selected kebele Health posts, Health centers and Hospital. Then simple random
sampling technique was used to select 340 women’s from registration Book (with control to case ratio of
3:1) resulting in 85 cases and 255 controls. Data was collected by diploma nurses using face to face
interview. Data was coded and entered in to Epi-info version 7 and then exported to SPSS V 20 for
analysis. Variables with P-values< 0.25 in bivariate logistic regression were selected for multiple logistic
regressions to determine independent determinants of implanon discontinuation. AOR with 95% CI was
calculated to identify the factors associated with implanon discontinuation.
