Abstract
Aim: The broad aim of this thesis is to study the geographical and socio-economic
differences and the determinants of transmission knowledge of sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the occurrence of
genital infection of the Bangladeshi adolescents aged 12-24 years old.
Materials: Data from the nationally representative survey of The 2005 Adolescents Survey in
Bangladesh (ASB) conducted by the BRAC Research and Evaluation Division was utilised
for this thesis.
Methods: The ASB was a cross-sectional study based on cluster sampling procedure. Of the
total 131,000 primary sampling units (PSUs), Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics had selected
1000 PSUs in a systematic sampling procedure to estimate the demographic indicators at
district level. From those 1000 PSUs, BRAC randomly selected 361 PSUs to get its precise
divisional estimates. Survey covered exactly 21,656 households, and from those 14,942
adolescents aged 10-24 years were possible to be interviewed during April-August 2005.
