Abstract
This paper explores the perceptions of male patrons of liquor
outlets towards the relationships between alcohol abuse, sexual risk-taking
and HIV infection in Botswana. It is based on 33 focus group discussions
and 16 in-depth interviews conducted in liquor outlets in the towns of
Mahalapye and Selebi Phikwe during February and March 2003. Results
indicate that alcohol expectancies are grounded in traits that reinforce
myths, misperceptions and fears about sexuality and condom use. These
myths act as a barrier to condom use and place patrons of liquor outlets at
risk of HIV infection. Overall, alcohol intoxication is viewed as a serious
deterrent to condom use. The paper addresses the research and policy
implications of these findings.
