    Series Information

The Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS) was launched in May 2009. With rapid changes in the economy, it was not adequate to have updates once every five or ten years hence the introduction of CMPHS. There were core questions from May 2009 to April 2010. In its second year which started in July 2010 to June 2011, a module on Household Budget Survey (HBS) was incorporated. Since the module on HBS catered for consumption in a detailed manner, it was not in the 2010/2011 CMPHS quarterly reports. This implies that the second up to the fourth quarters of 2010/2011 CMPHS focused mainly on economic characteristics of the population.

    Abstract

The Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS) was carried out to provide a permanent platform for the collection of data that was relevant to compute socio-economic indicators. Each round of the survey collected the same core data on household member's characteristics such as age, sex and marital status. This survey was split into 4 rounds:

    • First Quarter: August 2011 to October 2011.The questionnaire for the first quarter did not have an add-on module, the analysis focused on the demographic characteristics of the population, migration, educational and economic status of the population and the household economy.
    • Second Quarter: November 2011 to January 2012. The questionnaire for the second quarter did not have an add-on module as a result the analysis main focus was on economic status of the population and the household economy.
    • Third Quarter: February 2012 to April 2012.The questionnaire for the third quarter had an add-on module on water and sanitation; this was requested by the Water Commission. This result meant that analysis would mainly focus on economic status of the population, water, sanitation and the household economy.
    • Fourth Quarter: May 2012 to July 2012.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS) was administered to a representative sample of households. A total of about 6,060 households were selected.
The survey used a two-stage stratified cluster sample design, where primary sampling units were the census enumeration areas and the second stage sampling units were the households. Within each stratum, primary sampling units were selected with Probability Proportional to Size (PPS). These were the number of households within each primary sampling unit which served as a Measure of Size (MOS).

    Response Rate

    84.37% for the first quarter
    92.6% for the second quarter
    79.0% for the third quarter
