Abstract
Gender inequality, particularly in relation to access to and control over resources has been the subject of
concern at international and national levels. We are all too familiar with the arguments raised and backed by
research that illustrate the glaring discrepancies between women and men’s access to and control over economic
resources – from the allocation of national budgets to the control of financial and other resources at domestic and
individual levels. While the socio-economic status of women was previously debated using the Women in
Development approach, the paradigm shift to Gender and Development is increasingly being viewed as a more
qualitatively holistic approach for assessing women’s access to and control over resources in relation to their
male counterparts. What considerations should we as African social scientists keep in mind in order to promote
greater gender equity?
