Abstract
Approximately 30 percent of our annual budget is spent on meeting our energy requirements. Our import bill for petroleum products has crossed the Rs 800,000 million. Our dependence on imported petroleum products has gone up to 70 percent. Imports of coal, which is supposed to be available in abundance in our country, have gone up to 20 percent. Yet, only 55 percent of the households in the country are electrified, says Census 2001. Where is the problem? What is a viable solution?
