Abstract
Regional disparity is the outcome of unbalanced regional development that varies from region to region depending upon socio-cultural, economic and demographic characteristics. Murshidabad district of West Bengal is one of such backward districts identified in Human Development Report (HDI-0.46, 2004) and it belongs to the huge diversity in terms of geographic phenomena. The present study is aimed to demonstrate the spatial pattern of levels of development and to appreciate the inter-block disparity in Murshidabad using fourteen indicators. The simple statistical technique of Deprivation Index has been used to compute block level development index based on the data mainly collected from Primary Census Abstract-2001 of Murshidabad. The computed Development Index for each block portrays wide inter-regional disparity where, Suti-II holds top position while Farakka and Kandi block suffer from worst condition.
