A wide empirical literature reports that a mother’s level of education is one of the many factors affecting her likely child mortality experience. More difficult to establish, however, has been whether the level of education of those with whom a mother interacts is also an important factor. This article examines how maternal education is propagated through social interactions, ultimately affecting child survival, and how this propagation depends on the pattern of social interaction in different communities. Social interaction effects arising from education are estimated using the 2003 Kenya Demographic Health Survey, and the results inform a discussion about how educational resources can be allocated more efficiently to reduce the child mortality rat
