Abstract
In the state of Chiapas livestock has 72.8 % of employment in communities and
ejidos. The extensive management of livestock is identified as one of the most influential
factors in environmental degradation and deforestation. SAGARPA to national nivel,
implemented the PROGAN incentive that is intended to guide a sustainable livestock
production and serves 26,280 farmers in the state. This study measured environmental
indicators in pastures of beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries PROGAN to estimate their
influence on the environmental condition. The research was conducted in three
communities 1) Tierra y Libertad, 2) Paraíso and 3) Salto de Agua in Villaflores and
Pijijiapan municipalities in the state of Chiapas. The methodology consisted in the
evaluation of environmental indicators proposed by Nieuwenhuyse and Aguilar (2012) and
measurement of scattered paddock trees. Livestock production units (PUs) showed no
difference in the environmental indicators studied with beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries
of PROGAN. We conclude that PROGAN according to the indicators studied has not
encouraged to environmental improvement in the UPP in any of the communities, however
users see it as a good program. He suggests bringing their intervention strategies scales
according to differences between producers (level of training, knowledge management
infrastructure and livestock), prioritizing the way we produce and not the volume of
production goals for better environmental results program.
