Abstract
The aim of this paper is to explore empirically grounded caregiving strategies with the aim of
computing a caregiving inventory to enhance caregiving capacities in Botswana. The study used a qualitative
paradigm with a qualitative design in the form of a case study that was descriptive and explorative in nature.
Convenience sampling methodologies were used to select one hundred and forty primary caregivers for study
inclusion, but with only eighty-two availing themselves for a total of ten focus group discussions, while in-depth
interviews were conducted with four nurses and their coordinator. An inventory of strategies to enhance caregiving
was recommended and included improving and increasing the civil society assistance, psychosocial support and
community ownership, fundraising and donor support, training, the referral networks, income-generating projects,
care respite avenues, incentives, establishment of hospices and undertaking periodic research to establish gaps in
caregiving.
