Abstract
In this second edition, the book explores the evolving state of global health. Following the established structure, part 1 surveys the complex old and new challenges facing public health practitioners, and summarizes the state of health globally using new data based on the measures of the Global Burden of Disease developed by the WHO, and other groups, to better describe population heath states and trends. Part 2 presents a detailed review of the global state of public health, analysing the public health situation across the world. The final section covers several cross-cutting themes, including the developing field of international public health ethics, and the central and neglected role of the public in strengthening the practice of public health. In the final chapter, the editors conclude by summarizing the major themes of the book and exploring the opportunities for building the capacity of the public health workforce to respond the major global health needs. This book is an essential reading for anyone concerned with the status of global health, but particularly for public health students and practitioners, and policy makers.
