The number of woman immigrants from south-east Asia to Taiwan has
risen so rapidly to become an unneglectable part in Taiwanese population.
Among them, Vietnamese women account for the largest proportion, and
deserve special attention. The amount of research in Taiwan on Vietnam’s
education is very limited, let alone that on the topic of gender issues. Most
of the available research works adopt the quantitative approach and some
of them seem to intentionally utilize numeric data to superfi cially depict
gender equality. In this paper, the researcher attempts to depict the gender
images in Vietnam’s education, through the three qualitative fi eld studies
conducted in Vietnam between 2012-2013 for a contextual analysis of
its society, culture and economic developments. The research finds that
Confucianism, socialist ideologies, and economic development trends all
infl uence gender pictures in the Vietnamese culture and in turn infl uence
gender in Vietnam’s education.
