Abstract
South Africa is often described as “the rape capital of the world”1
, a description which
is justified because of the prevalence of sexual violence in the country. As per the latest
statistics of the South African Police Service there were 51 895 sexual offences reported from
April 2015 to March 2016. Given the underreporting of sexual offences official statistics only
capture a portion of actual incidence rates (Jewkes & Abrahams, 2002). Some estimates for
example say that a woman is raped every 26 seconds in South Africa, and that eight out of
nine cases remain unreported (Kapp, 2006).
