Abstract
Introduction: Globally HIV counseling and testing is recognized as priority in national HIV programs because it forms the gateway to HIV prevention, care treatment and support interventions but this has not become entrenched in peripheral health facilities in developing countries. It is crucial to increase the detection rate of HIV infection among women in reproductive age, so that effective interventions can be delivered. In sub-Saharan Africa surveys showed that 12% of men and 10% of women in the general population had been tested for HIV and received the results. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the acceptability of HIV counseling and testing among women using family planning in Bishooftu town. Methods: The study used quantitative study method in the form of institution based cross sectional survey. A total of 636 women in reproductive age group selected from two health facilities and were using family planning service at the time of the survey were included in the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and analyzed by using SPSS version 16. Result: About 100% of the study subjects have heard about HIV/AIDS. Acceptance of counseling was 615(96.6 %). Level of acceptance of HIV testing in this study was 408(89.6%) and among these 3(0.7%) of them were tested positive. All of those who refused testing were 47(10.4%), from the refusal 146(83.3 %) needed further consultation. Those who do not perceived themselves at risk of acquiring HIV 526(83.9%) were found to be higher in accepting HIV test. Marital and educational statuses were found to be statically significant with acceptance of HIV testing. Those who are living in urban area were found to be higher in accepting HIV testing compared to those who reside in rural. Conclusion: HIV counseling and testing service utilization among the study subjects is high. However, much more must be done. To take advantages of the interventions of reproductive age and before pregnancy women need to know their sero status and they must therefore have access to HIV counseling and testing.
