Abstract
Operationally, the word “caregiver” refers to both the primary caregiver (family caregiver who
stays with the sick person most of the time) and the community caregiver, referred to as a
“volunteer” in the Botswana context, who moves from house to house to supervise and assist
the primary caregiver. The researcher (hence the paper) does not distinguish between these two
types of caregivers as they both assist in care giving. However, only primary caregivers were
interviewed (primary unit of analysis). The author also uses the three terms “client”, “sick
person” or “patient” to refer to people living with HIV/Aids and other terminal illnesses. NGOs
in this context refers to all the organisations not sponsored or run by the government, and
therefore includes all community-based, faith-based, private sector and grassroots
organisations.
