L'Enquête Démographique et de Santé 2004 est la troisième EDS réalisée au Cameroun après celles de 1991 et de 1998

L'enquête couvre tous les membres du ménage, toutes les femmes âgées de 15-49 ans vivant de façon permanente dans les ménages sélectionnés, ou présentes la nuit précédant l'enquête, les hommes du ménages de 15-59 ans devait également être enquêté au cours de l'EDSC-III ainsi que tous les enfants de moins de 5 ans.

Des 466 grappes sélectionnées dans le cadre de l'EDSC-III, une seule n'a pu être enquêtée, car elle se trouvait dans la province de l'Extrême-Nord. La population était en transhumance ; seuls 4 ménages sur 10 ont été couverts.
Face-to-face
Dans le cadre du suivi des travaux sur le terrain, des missions de supervision ont été organisées régulièrement. Les membres de l'équipe technique ont assuré cette supervision des activités de terrain. Les missions de supervision avaient pour but d'évaluer les conditions de travail de chaque équipe, de contrôler la qualité du travail, de résoudre les problèmes éventuels rencontrés par les équipes, de les ravitailler en matériel, et de rapporter à Yaoundé les questionnaires remplis.
La saisie des données sur micro ordinateur a débuté juste après le démarrage de l'enquête sur le terrain. Les questionnaires étaient renvoyés régulièrement du terrain à l'INS à Yaoundé où des agents de bureau étaient chargés de leur vérification. Ils étaient ensuite transmis à l'atelier de saisie. Les données ont été saisies en utilisant le logiciel CSPRO, développé conjointement par le Bureau du Recensement des États-Unis, le Programme DHS, et le Serpro S.A. Tous les questionnaires ont fait l'objet d'une double saisie pour éliminer du fichier le maximum d'erreurs de saisie. Par ailleurs, un programme de contrôle de qualité permettait de détecter pour chaque équipe et même pour chaque enquêtrice/enquêteur, certaines des principales erreurs de collecte. Ces informations étaient répercutées aux équipes sur le terrain, au jour le jour quand cela était possible et lors des missions de supervision, afin d'améliorer la qualité des données. La saisie et la vérification de la cohérence interne des réponses se sont achevées en octobre 2004, suite à une mission d'un expert informaticien de l'ORC Macro venu pour la vérification finale.
Les travaux d'analyse ont été réalisés en collaboration avec ORC Macro. Sur les seize chapitres du rapport principal, onze ont été rédigés par les cadres nationaux, quatre par les experts de ORC Macro International et un chapitre a fait l'objet d'une rédaction conjointe. Un séminaire d'harmonisation d'une durée de dix-sept jours a été organisé à Kribi dans le sud du pays avant la finalisation du rapport principal. Ce séminaire qui a regroupé les auteurs des différents chapitres (à l'exception de ceux de ORC Macro) et les personnes ressources a permis aux participants de faire des observations sur les différents chapitres afin de préparer leur version finale. Cette version (du rapport principal et rapport de synthèse) a été réalisée au siège de l'ORC Macro par deux cadres de l'INS et deux de cette institution.
Les erreurs de mesure sont celles associées à la mise en oeuvre de la collecte et de l'exploitation des données telles que l'omission de ménages sélectionnés, la mauvaise interprétation des questions de la part de l'enquêtrice ou de l'enquêtée, ou les erreurs de saisie des données. Bien que des dispositions particuliers aient été prises pour minimiser ce type d'erreur pendant la mise en oeuvre de l'EDSC-III, il est difficile d'éviter et d'évaluer toutes les erreurs de mesure.
