Abstract
Since the inception of aquaculture in Nigeria, historical accounts showed marked
growth in the aquaculture industry. However, development had been limited by
such issues as inadequate knowledge in issues of production except in the case of
fanning of catfish which had grown to become an industry. Thus, profile of species
cultured is limited to tilapia and catfish only with several status of others remaining
at potential state. The future outlook is positive as production from fisheries is
stagnating worldwide thus making growth and development in aquaculture a must.
Also, the growing population and the need to arrest increasing failure in socio
economic indices of unemployment and poverty in the country would continue to
improve the positive horizon of aquaculture as it is capable of ameliorating many
of these challenges of modern economic life.
