Abstract
Thisstudy focuseson the developm entstagesofageing and itsregionaldifferencesin China based on
exam ination ofofficialstatisticsand docum ents. The developm entofageing in China hasexperienced three m ajor
stages.Firstly,in the 1950s,low coefficientofelderly population (over65 years)paced up to prim ary adulttype.
Secondly,there was a deeply drop ofthe elderly population because ofnaturaldisasterand politicalfactors in the
1960s. Thirdly, from the 1970s to the end of20th century, the constantincreasing ofelderly coefficientm ade
Chinaclosetoelderlysociety.W ith statisticdataof population,Logisticm odelisused to sim ulate the future developm
entofageing,and two characteristicsofdevelopm entofageing are presented.Firstly,asforageing from 2005 to
2050,the elderly coefficientwillgrow up significantly from 8.48% to 16.30% .Secondly,after2025,the increasing
rate ofelderly coefficientwillslow down gradually. The regionaldifferencesofelderly population in China can be
sum m arized asfollows:1)the eastern China possesseshigherelderly coefficientand hugerelderpopulation than the
western China; 2) about47.4% ofm unicipalities and provinces in the eastern China becom e elderly especially
Shanghai,Zhejiang Province,Jiangsu Province,Beijing,Tianjin and Shandong Province;3)ageing intensity ishigherin
ruralarea than urban area butgetting close each other, and there are m ore elderly people in ruralarea than in
urban area.Therefore,thesewillarose aged care problem s,and itbecom esim portantissue to establish the socialsecurity
system in ruralareasassoon aspossibleforelderly people.
