| Abstract | At the end of 2011, 34 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), 68% of these in Sub-Saharan Africa (UNAIDS, 2012). HIV and AIDS remain a major public health challenge that continues to affect the lives of millions of people globally. Gender inequality has been recognised as a key factor to understand the dynamic and impact of the epidemic, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (Niëns & Lowery, 2009; Steinitz & Ashton, 2007; UNAIDS, 2012). |
