Abstract
This paper analyses the trajectories of Colombian young adults from 18-28
years old into household independence as a function of the level of education
comparing the results for 2002 and 2014 in the urban areas of Colombia.
Particularly, it intends to identify if higher educational level is associated with
a higher proportion of youth living at parents’ home, or if a lower level of
education is related with a higher share of independent youth. The above
can also be seen from the perspective of the opportunity cost faced by young
adults to acquire housing in relation to study. Indeed, there is a positive relationship
between the educational level and the dependency, a dynamic that
is accompanied by factors such as housing prices, education costs, working
conditions, and the comfort. In that sense, the understanding of how these
trade-offs are made and how the housing and education pathways intertwine
is important to the implications and development of a long-term housing
policy
