This is the second GSHS conducted by Chile.
The GSHS is a school-based survey which uses a self-administered questionnaire to obtain data on young people's health behaviour and protective factors related to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children and adults worldwide.

Sampling
The 2004 Chile GSHS was a school-based survey of students in grades 7° primary, 8° primary, and 1° secondary. A two-stage cluster sample design was used to produce data representative of all students in grades 7° primary, 8° primary, and 1° secondary in Chile. At the first stage, schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size. At the second stage, classes were randomly selected and all students in selected classes were eligible to participate.
A total of 2,016 students participated in the Chile (Region V) GSHS.
A total of 2,033 students participated in the Chile (Region I) GSHS.
A total of 1,971 students participated in the Chile (Region VIII) GSHS.
A total of 2,111 students participated in the Chile (Metropolitan Region) GSHS.
A total of 1,772 students participated in the Chile (Metropolitan Mun with Intervention) GSHS.
A total of 1,777 students participated in the Chile (Metropolitan Mun without Intervention) GSHS.
A total of 1,859 students participated in the Chile (Region VIII Mun with Intervention) GSHS.
A total of 1,857 students participated in the Chile (Region VIII Mun without Intervention) GSHS.
Metropolitan Region with Intervention: The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 80%, and the overall response rate was 80%.
Metropolitan Region without Intervention: The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 85%, and the overall response rate was 85%.
Region VIII with Intervention: The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 89%, and the overall response rate was 89%.
Region VIII without Intervention: The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 82%, and the overall response rate was 82%.
The weighting formula used is:

W2 - The inverse of the probability of selecting each classroom
f1 - A school-level non response adjustment factor
f2 - A student-level non response adjustment factor calculated by classroom

Data processing
All data processing (scanning, cleaning, editing, and weighting) was conducted at the US Centers for Disease Control.
Data Access
The user undertakes:
(1) to acknowledge the data source.
(2) to share any planned publications with WHO prior to publication.
(3) to offer co-authorship of any reports or publications using the survey results to the coordinator of the survey.
(4) to use the data for non-commercial, not-for-profit public health purposes only.
