Definition
COUNTYUK identifies the registration county where the household was enumerated. Registration counties are the highest level sub-national administrative unit. Registration counties are not co-terminus with so-called ancient (or administrative) counties.
In some of the samples there were households who indicated a registration county as the military abroad or on British ships of the military abroad. These households are coded within a general "Abroad" category.
Registration districts (DISTUK) are the next geographic unit below registration counties in England and Wales. Registration districts are divided into subdistricts, which are contained in the variable SUBDISTUK. Registration districts in contain parishes. Registration districts contain parishes. See year-specific parish variables, PARISHUK_1851, PARISHUK_1861, etc.
In Scotland and the adjacent islands in the British seas there are no subdistricts. Registration districts in Scotland contain parishes.
The relationship among different historical UK geographic units is described in separate files for England and Wales and Scotland.
