BPLUK indicates the county of birth for those born in England, Wales and Scotland, if this is possible to determine from the given place of birth. For those who recorded a place of birth which is known to be in one of the constituent elements of the United Kingdom, this information is coded here as 990 for England, 991 for Wales, and 992 for Scotland. The Channel Islands are coded to the respective island as is the Isle of Man. Those born in the Isles of Scilly are included within Cornwall. Those people born in Ireland have been allocated the code 993 and all others (i.e., those born outside of Great Britain and the islands in the British seas have been classified here as "foreign" (code 998).
