Interviewer instructions
<span class="h2">7.11 Battery IX. Work history</span>
<br />This battery of questions focuses on inquiring about the characteristics of the last job that was lost or left in the interviewed population, such as: context in which this situation occurred and the time frame (if it occurred during the current year or in prior years), the cause, type of occupation that was performed, the type of activities to which the economic unit for which the person worked was dedicated, the type of employment benefits, income received and current availability of economic income derived from that lost employment relationship, in order to assess the quality of that job in relation to the most recent one.</p>
<p>This battery of questions distinguishes three types of sequences; two of them are aimed at subordinate workers, with a view toward identifying those who lost their job due to difficulties centered more on employment conditions of the market and by their own decision, respectively; and the third sequence identifies the main reasons why independent workers left or lost their business or activity.</p>
<p><span class="em">Question 9a</span>
<br />This question is asked to employed persons who at some point lost a job or business and to unemployed persons with work experience, to find out the reason why they lost or left their last job.</p>
<p>[Omitted figure]</p>
<p>Instructions:</p>
<div class="i1">- If you are not able to identify the reason why a person does not have a job, return to question 9 and reclassify the response by circling option 9.<br />- In the case of a person who stated they were absent form their activity or trade (question 2e = 1), ask about its characteristics.</div><div class="i1">1. Lost their job or terminated their employment</div><div class="i2">- The time or work for which they were hired ended.<br />- They were left unemployed because they were fired or because their source of employment went bankrupt.<br />- They lost their job due to downsizing.</div><div class="i1">2. Quit their job</div><div class="i2">- They decided to leave their job, regardless of the cause of the resignation: conflicts in the work environment, breach of work conditions or welfare benefits, due to marriage or pregnancy, felt tired of working. Finally, a personal decision led the person to leave their source of employment.</div><div class="i1">3. Closed or left their own business</div><div class="i2">- They decided to leave their own business, regardless of the reason for this situation: the business was not very profitable, high tax payments, too much competition, they wanted to work in something different, they wanted to rest. Thus, the economic unit permanently ceased operating.</div><div class="i1">4. Became a pensioner, retired or resigned from their business</div><div class="i2">- They retired or started receiving a pension.<br />- They chose to stop working in their own business or company. As opposed to option 3, in this case the economic unit continues to operate, despite the fact that the independent worker no longer works there.</div><div class="i1">5. Were arrested, had an accident or long-term illness</div><div class="i2">- They stopped going to work with the regularity they should have after suffering from an accident or illness. This includes cases of alcoholism or drug addiction.<br />- They no longer go to work at their workplace because they have been incarcerated after facing a criminal proceeding because they committed a crime.</div><div class="i1">6. Returned or deported from the United States</div><div class="i2">- They had some difficulty, either employment related, economic, social or personal in the United States, so they returned to Mexico.</div><div class="i1">7. A natural phenomenon or disaster affected their source of employment</div><div class="i2">- They were left without work due to a fire, earthquake, flood or hurricane, which prevented the economic unit from continuing to operate.</div><div class="i1">8. None of the above</div><div class="i2">- They lost their job for a reason other than those mentioned in the preceding options, for example: wanted to have their own business, had difficulties with their employer, marriage, pregnancy.<br />- Sequence to follow. If you circle option 1, 8 or 9, continue with question 9b; if you circle option 2, go to question 9d; if you circle option 3, go to question 9e; but if you circle any of the options from 4 to 7, go to question 9f.</div>
