    Abstract

    The aim of the survey was to compare energetic and macronutrient intake with nutritional recommendations in undernourished children from 6 to 59 months of age in Cantagalo, Sao Tome e Principe. To assess the relationship between nutritional adequacy and undernutrition type and severity, age, breastfeeding and reported difficulties in access to enough food.

    • SUBJECTS: information on the participants such as age, sex and geographical location
    • CONSUMPTION: information on all foods consumed by each participant in each survey day, including quantities and nutrient values

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

    The study employed convenience sampling, a non-probability technique that selects participants based on their proximity to the researcher. A survey was applied to 118 caregivers of children from 6 to 59 months of age, selected from consulted and screened children under the Maternal and Child Nutritional Monitoring Program (PANMI, Programa de Acompanhamento Nutricional Materno-Infantil) of the Helpo Association.

    Quantitative individual 24-hour recall was employed for data collection. No repeated dietary recalls were collected. The 24-hour recall was accompanied by a photo album for food quantification by the children's caregiver. Only weekdays were covered.
