The survey was confined to private farming households and their holdings excluding large scale farms (with holdings larger than 20 hectares) which are covered by the annual surveys, of large scale farms. Every region in Tanzania mainland was covered.

Sampling
At psu level, the sampling weights are the quotients of the stratum population totals to that of the selected psu
At village level, the sampling weights are the quotients of the respective psu totals to the totals of the respective villages
At household level, the sampling weights are the quotients of the total number of households in the respective villages to the total number of households in the sample

The agriculture section of the Bureau of statistics had the main responsibility over the 1986/87 agriculture sample survey. All arrangements, including consultations with internal and external experts were entrusted on the staff of this section and consequently the section functioned as the headquarter main supervision body. The rest of the headquarter supervision staff was drawn from statisticians in other section of the Bureau at the discretion of the coordinator.
Data processing
The size of the 1986/87 AGSASU was such that it was necessary to use computers for the analysis of the data. Therefore the questionnaire for the survey were designed for computerized data processing, and the supervision structure was elaborate enough to ensure proper filling of the questionnaires during field work.
