Description

Definition
CONCURPARS1MN (MV854A) can be used to calculate the point prevalence of concurrent partnerships in a given sample. This measure is defined as the proportion of men with more than one ongoing sexual partnership at the point six months before the interview.

CONCURPARS1MN is constructed based on the man's responses to questions pertaining to his sexual history. Specifically, the man was asked when he last had sexual intercourse. If he reported having sex in the last 12 months, he was then asked how long ago he first had sex and how long ago he last had sex with his three most recent partners (where applicable).

For more information about how this variable was constructed, see "Measuring Concurrent Sexual Partnerships: Experience of the MEASURE DHS Project to Date," [URL omitted from DDI.] by Joy D. Fishel, Ladys Ortiz, and Bernard Barrere.

In addition, researchers should be careful to distinguish this variable from CONCURPARS2MN, which can be used to calculate the cumulative prevalence of concurrent partnerships.
