Description

Definition
MAFEDTUBER24H (V414F) indicates whether the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots during the previous day, either at night or during the daytime. These vegetables are a source of healthful nutrients but lack the vitamin A content of their yellow equivalents, such as sweet potatoes and orange yams. MAFEDTUBER24H describes a characteristic of the mother rather than the child.

The complementary variable MAFEDYELVEG24H (V414I) indicates whether the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child pumpkin, carrots, squash, or sweet potatoes that are yellow or orange inside.

Although the question wording asks about foods given to a specific child during the previous day, responses relate to the mother, so all young children of the mother are coded the same way. If the mother reported she gave her youngest surviving child white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots in the previous day, all of her young children in the data are coded as "yes," including any children who have died or who live elsewhere.

A positive response in MAFEDTUBER24H thus does not necessarily indicate whether a particular child of the mother ate white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots during the previous day. IPUMS-DHS users should instead employ the variable FEDTUBER24H (M37R) to determine whether the child ate white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots during the previous day. See Comparability.

The related variable MAFEDTUBER24HX (V469R) reports the number of times the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots during the previous 24 hours. MAFEDTUBERWKD (V470R) reports the number of days the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child white potatoes, white yams, manioc, cassava, or any other foods made from roots during the past week.
