The thesis comprises three chapters and seeks to enhance understanding of economic transition from a planned to a market economy. It focuses primarily on
education, wages and the labour supply in Central and Eastern European Countries, taking Belarus as its main case study. The first chapter tracks changes in
education before and during transition, focusing in particular on intergenerational educational mobility. The second chapter discusses trends in wage inequality and carries out an indepth analysis of the gender pay gap. The third chapter pays special attention to the change in labour supply elasticities and its ensuing implications, such as the contraction of female labour force participation and the evolution of gender roles.
