Abstract
The paper tries to explore the role of women education in determining family planning practices in
Ethiopia. Data from demographic and health survey of Ethiopia, education statistics annual abstract of
Ethiopia, policies and strategies of the country were used to investigate the role of women education in
family planning program. Women’s level of education significantly determines the successfulness of
family planning programs. The propensity of participating in different family planning programs
increases with increasing in educational level. Maternal mortality rate, infant and childhood mortality
rate, total fertility rate, teenage pregnancy rate and abortion incidences decrease when level of
education of women increases. Delivery at health facilities, contraceptive prevalence rate, first age at
marriage and age at first birth are positively correlated with level of women’s education. Primary net
enrollment of girls has increased and gender disparity at primary level has been converged. But still the
proportion of females at the higher ladder of education are low and needs due attention. Designing
strategies which enable to increase women enrollment and retain in schools, strengthening adult
education and enforcement of the family code can increase women literacy rate and family planning
utilization.
