Abstract
This study examines the role of migrants’ remittances in developing countries’ fertility transition. Employing a panel of eight South Asian countries for the period 1990-2012 and controlling for various economic and socio-demographic factors, we find that remittances are associated with a significant drop in the number of children born to women of childbearing age. This association appears to be more important than that with women's education and labor market participation. This could result from better access to healthcare and contraceptive methods available to migrant households, as well as decreased need for children for the household’s future financial needs.
