Abstract
Mozambique has vast forest resources, estimated around 27 million hectares with potential for commercial
logging. Official accounts however, show that more than half volume of the commercial species harvested
lately belongs to three species: Afzelia quanzensis (Chanfuta), Pterocarpus angolensis (Umbila) and Millettia
stuhlmannii (Panga-panga), while the remaining half volume corresponds to more than 28 wood species.
Despite lack of reliable data, illegal logging in its different variants is probably one of the driving factors
behind degradation of the country natural forests.
