This report contains preliminary results of India's 1991 census in a simplified format designed for nontechnical users. Consideration is given to census methodology and to causes of the predicted undercount. Tables present data on population characteristics, including literacy and the sex ratio, birth and death rates, and infant mortality, and on economic factors such as labor force participation and income levels.
