Abstract
This study analyzes the baseline data collected in Bangladesh to study the job shifts amongst women working in various types of occupations. The data comprise of 300 women, divided into four subgroups viz. garment worker, sex worker, domestic worker and microcredit borrowers who were interviewed in June 2004 as part of a study taken up by the Independent University, Bangladesh. The study looks at the effect of education on the empowerment of women. Binary logistic regression is used and results show that although education is initially a significant predictor of empowerment, marital status overrides its importance and education becomes insignificant. Decision making index has positive association with empowerment in this model. Although Bangladesh has had high levels of school enrollment in the recent years, increased literacy rates alone may not contribute towards empowerment. Preventing school drop outs from secondary levels and implementation of legal age at marriage is recommended.
