Abstract
Using evidence of two data sources - the 2001 Population and Housing Census of Albania and a remotely sensed IKONOS image, the same approximately period , this thesis documents and identifies the demographical and further social patterns in Tirana, the capital of Albania. Being a country in transition, Albania, sustained large number of changes had a great effect in the wider area of capital, concerning people and their surrounding space. A differentiation between the historical centre and the peripheral areas of the city, in terms of socio-economic aspects was verified. Thus, since satellite remote sensing cannot provide demographic information directly, it was used in conjuction with census data and integrated methods of analysis in order to prove once more its considerable value. An attempt was made to distinguish the kinds of rooftops, in Tirana, and from there to through the help of statistical analysis and tools, were correlated with the age of the buildings.
