Abstract |
This study examines the challenges faced by informal e-waste workers in Accra, Ghana and their linkages with actors in the formal economy. The framework of the study is guided by central themes in the post-structuralist Informalization approach. Financial instability, hazardous working conditions and state persecution are the main challenges informal workers face. The study also reveals that in the e-waste management industry the formal and informal economy are inter-dependent. Building on this, a formal recycling institution plans to implement e-waste management programs that will incorporate the activities of the informal economy. While this is a positive step forward, economic policies currently in place need to be taken into consideration if this collaboration between the formal and informal economy is to be sustainable and mutually beneficial. |
