Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine the dynamics of HIV status disclosure among HIV positive
women in Zimbabwe. The research design was descriptive cross-sectional study. Study convenience sample were 77
HIV positive women recruited from three health facilities. Knowledge of HIV status of partner was correlated with
whom they stayed with .84, practice safe sex .83 relationship types .83, partner’s reaction to HIV status disclosure
.55 and marital status .55. Strong relationships .74 were observed between perceived problem of violence and
divorce. The study observed correlation between marital status and protected safe sex.60 relationship type.60, to
who they stayed with .51 and knowledge of HIV status of sexual partner. Partners’ reaction to HIV status disclosure
was correlated to type of relationship .54 and having protected sex .54. The study revealed that knowledge of HIV
status of partner was highly significant. The study shows that knowledge of partner’s status, relationship type, safe
sex and perceived fear of violence and discrimination were correlated and high loaded. The study findings show that
HIV status disclosure for HIV positive women whilst a gendered issue is influenced socio-cultural and gender
dynamics are reproduced in the private and public area. For women HIV positive women HIV status disclosure
offers both risks. Personal, intra-personal and interpersonal dynamics towards HIV status are important to
facilitate HIV status disclosure. This is more conducive when the both partners not only know their HIV status but
also disclose at personal, family and community levels.
