Abstract
Owing to the expansion of South African Multi-national Corporations, particularly Shoprite, into the rest of Africa, the Africa Roundtable on Investments is intending to conduct research to investigate the economic, social and legislative issues surrounding retail in three SADC countries, Zambia, Malawi and Swaziland. The methodology for this study of Shoprite in Zambia was literature review, observation semi-structured interviews and with workers and other stake holders. The main findings and conclusions are that: a) The Zambian Government has very good developmental potential in terms of mineral resources and development plans that have been put in place. b) The second observation is that South Africa is a major player on the Zambian economic scene. c) The third observation is that Shoprite possesses the capacity to contribute to sustainable development and poverty reduction. The recommendations to the government are that: a) The Government should quickly come up with a proper and up to date labour law that promotes employment security and a living wage. b) The Government should hold a national conference to review the state of labour and industrial relations in Zambia and come up with a way forward. c) The Government should develop a good understanding of the intentions of foreign investors. Recommendations to Shoprite are that: a) Shoprite in Zambia should take a long term view of the retail and wholesale sector and plan to develop the sector in addition to making profits. b) Shoprite in Zambia should develop a culture of dialogue with stakeholders. The report also includes recommendations to CSOs.
