Abstract
In Ruanda-Urundi a series of demographic inquiries was taken yearly between 1952-57. The crude death rate was constantly underestimated; in Rwanda it declined from 19/1000 in 1953 to 14 in 1957. The levels of decline are suspiciously low and may indicate a reluctance to report deaths. The average crude birth rate during 1953-57 is 50/1000 in Rwanda and 46/1000 in Burundi. In the same period the proportion of females under age 1 was 4.4% in Rwanda, 4% in Burundi. A complete census of Kenya was taken in 1962; a sample 10% of the population were surveyed. The mean age of reported fertility was above 29 in all provinces, and above 30 in 4 of 6. The proportions of women under age 15 in the 6 provinces were .396 (Coast), .467 (Eastern), .466 (Central), .491 (Western), and .479 (Nyanza). The total fertility for the same provinces was 5.4, 6.8, 6.6, 6.5, 8.1, 7.9, and 6.8 respectively. In 1957 a population census was taken in Tanganyika (now part of Tanzania). The information was minimal: tribe, sex, and 5 age categories. The 1959 Census of Uganda used both a census and a sample survey similar to the method used in Tanganyika. The crude birth rate for the province of Uganda was estimated to be 42. From 1960-61 a complete census of Gabon was taken along with a sample survey of 10% of the population. Niger was surveyed in 1960.
