Abstract
Urbanization is a form of social transformation from traditional rural societies to modern urban communities. The growth of urbanization is natural and inevitable consequences of development. An attempt is made to study the different types of Gibbs measures and statistical measures of urbanization. The data for the study is collected from census of West Bengal Town Directory from 1901–2001. The finding of study reveals that all these measures namely- Degree of Urbanization, Tempo of Urbanization, Scale of Urbanization, and Scale of Population Concentration is found at an higher rate when we study the population census starting from 1901. The increase of these indices the large city population increases in the large cities over a period of time. The application of Entropy Model indicates that the number of cities by city size classes should increase over a period of time.
