Abstract
Pottery making has been a traditional occupation of the Hira women of Assam since time immemorial. In the Scheduled Caste Hira community, both men and women are contributing to their family income. But, Hira women are socially, politically, economically poor. The prime objective of the present study is to determine the socio-economic status of Hira women in Assam as a whole and in Barpeta in particular. The entire analysis is based on both primary and secondary data. Simple statistical tools like percentage are used for analysing the collected data. From the entire analysis, it is found that socio-economic status of Hira women is not satisfactory at all.
